For over a century from 1770 butter production was a vital source of income for the huge number of tenant farmers on marginal land in rural Ireland.

The salted butter was transported on horseback in wooden barrels to the worlds biggest butter market in Cork city, from here it was shipped around the globe.

Farmers from South Kerry with two casks of butter on horseback would make the three day journey to Cork along the old Butter Roads - a series of tracks over the mountains offering the shortest route to the market.

These ancient pathways such as the Kerry Way are now being enjoyed as wonderful hiking and rambling routes by visitors and locals alike.

Our unique kelp handled butter knives have handles made from storm cast seaweed stalks and are a fitting tribute to the women, men and cattle who shaped this important part of our heritage
