Sustainability.
" Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities " UNWTO Definition
At Atlantic Irish Seaweed we work to support, adapt and implement the UNWTO definition of sustainable tourism.
We offer Coastal Food Tours at Derrynane on the Skellig Coast of South Kerry. Our area is part of Kenmare Bay which is a Special Area of Conservation under the EU’s Habitat Directive. In February 2023 the Skellig Coast became Ireland’s first Hope Spot.
We feel so lucky to work in such a special place and work as "custodians of the shore" we must minimise our impact on this pristine coast.
We engage with our visitors to help them discover how Algae produce over 50% of the earths Oxygen, and how we must all endeavour to respect and protect our oceans.
We are committed to continually improving, by monitoring and cutting back on energy & water use and waste. We have switched our net packaging to a compostable option and currently offer Irelands only biodegradable Seaweed Bath Bags. We will practice ethical purchasing, shop local & buy Fair-trade products and undertake responsible marketing.
We are currently choosing projects to offset our carbon footprint.
We will continue to support our vibrant local community and share our passion for biodiversity & conservation.
Our journey will be ongoing and will strive to keep heading in the right sustainability direction.
